1895 Morgan Silver Dollar
The 1895-O Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) had a somewhat lower mintage with 450,000 coins produced at the New Orleans Mint. Importantly, much of this mintage was circulated and no hoards of coins emerged in later years. Thus, the 1895-O is available, albeit at a premium, in circulated grades and scarce in uncirculated grades.
Only a few hundred Proof 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar exist today, although US Mint records indicate 12,000 business strike dollars were produced. The 1895 is a major hurdle for Morgan Dollar collectors seeking a complete set, which explains its high value. Value of 1895-O Morgan Silver Dollar From a numismatic standpoint, the quality of the coiners’ work at the New Orleans Mint this year was shoddy. Workers, knowing that most of these 1895-O Morgan Silver Dollars were not wanted and would likely go into bulk storage, had little incentive to create quality coinage.
- The Birth of America's beautiful Morgan Dollar – Minted from 1878-1904, and once again in 1921, the Morgan silver dollar is one of America's most popular collectible coins. To fully understand the history of these 90% silver beauties, we first have to go back to the era of our nation's great gold and silver rushes – particularly 1859 and the great Comstock Lode!
- No silver dollar coinage for circulation was struck this year at the Philadelphia Mint. Striking was limited to 880 Proofs. With such a low production amount, the 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar is by far the rarest date in the Morgan dollar series and will be worth the most.
Examples of the coin graded MS65 have sold for more than $125,000. The finest 1895-O Morgan Dollar is a lone coin graded PCGS MS67 that sold for $575,000 at an auction held in November 2005.
Prices for circulated examples are around $500 for examples graded VF-20 to $1,400 for the grade AU-50. At the MS-60 grade level, prices jump to more than $10,000.
